Meridian boys squeeze by Ferndale

Meridian's boys' basketball team took a 53-50 Northwest Conference win over Ferndale in a back-and-forth matchup Friday, Jan. 17, at Ferndale. The Trojans were led by Alex Martin's 16 points, including three of their four 3-pointers.

Meridian coach Shane Stacy said in a phone interview that throughout the final 2 minutes and 30 seconds of the game the two teams jockeyed to get the win. The Trojans came out on top after Jake Plagerman got fouled shooting a layup and made the free throw, putting his team up 52-50.

"(Austin) Honeycutt hit some shots in the second half and (Brady) Shearer hit some big shots," Stacy said. "We turned the ball over a few times, just let their pressure get to us."

Shearer had 17 points and Honeycutt added 14 for the Golden Eagles, who are now 5-8 overall and 3-3 in NWC play.

Kyle Young added 16 more for Meridian (6-6, 3-2 NWC).

Meridian plays next at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at La Conner. Ferndale looks to bounce back at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Lynden Christian.
