Squalicum well represented in soccer state poll

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJanuary 17, 2014

The Squalicum girls' soccer team finished a program-best third place at the Class 2A State Girls' Soccer Championships, and with six players being named to the Washington State Soccer Coaches Association first team, second team and honorable mention soccer teams, it's easy to see why.

Sophomore forward Kim Hazlett and sophomore defender Rachel Dorr were both first-team selections. Hazlett finished with a Northwest Conference-best 20 goals and 51 points. She had five multi-goal games for Squalicum this season. Likewise for Dorr, she played a key role for a Storm backline that only allowed 15 goals all season.

Dorr's sister, Kim Dorr, who had 18 goals and five assists, was a second-team selection at forward. Senior Lauren Gibb was an honorable-mention forward. Rounding out the selections for the Storm were juniors Julie DeVere and Michelle Saunders, both of which were honorable mentions.

Bellingham, the team that defeated inner-city rival Squalicum in the state semifinals, only got one selection in second-team midfielder Hattie North. North, a junior, finished the year with two goals and two assists, but her tenacity on the defensive end helped propel the Red Raiders from the last team in at districts to the second-place finisher at state.

Sehome's Emily Webster and Katie Mindnich were both second-team selections. Webster's six goals were second on the team, while her four assists paced the Mariners' group.

Meridian's Taylor Lunde, who was the All-Whatcom County girls' soccer player of the year, was named to the Class 1A first team after recording 19 goals and nine assists. She helped lead the Trojans to the quarterfinals of the Class 1A State Girls' Soccer Championships.

She was joined by fellow teammates Karissa Culley (second team), Haley Belanger (honorable mention) and Sydney Gospodinovich (honorable mention). Gospodinovich, a freshman, and Culley led a Trojans' defense that only allowed 23 goals in 21 games.

Lynden Christian's Sara Dougan was the only other Class 1A player selected, as her four goals and five assists earned her an honorable-mention selection.

Ferndale's Carly Bannerman was the lone selection coming from the 3A. The junior defender was a second-team selection after backing a defensive line that only allowed 22 goals on the season. She also had one goal and three assists for the Golden Eagles.
