Hit-and-run driver at large after hitting WWU student

BELLINGHAM - Police want the public's help to track down the driver who hit a Western Washington University student and fled the scene late Thursday, Jan. 16.

An eastbound car struck Seth R. Thompson, 21, just after 10 p.m. as he walked north in a crosswalk at Bill McDonald Parkway and South College Drive, by Buchanan Towers, said Bellingham Police Lt. Bob Vander Yacht.

Thompson was taken to St. Joseph hospital by ambulance for injuries to his face and shoulder. He was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police believe the Honda was going about the 25 mph speed limit. Several witnesses thought the driver knew someone had been hit, Vander Yacht said, because the car hesitated for a moment before driving off.

The impact knocked off the passenger's side mirror of the car - an early- to mid-'90s model white Honda, possibly a Civic - and caused damage to the passenger side. Witnesses told police the car had dark trim along the panels. The driver's side mirror should be black.

The crosswalk does not have flashing lights, but there's a bright streetlamp overhead.

Tips should be directed to Traffic Officer Bill Medlen at 360-778-8748.
