Lions fall from top spot after late loss

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJanuary 15, 2014

Anacortes seems to have taken more than just one game from Lynden's boys' basketball team.

The Lions, after being a unanimous-No. 1 selection in the Associated Press' Class 2A prep boys' basketball standings last week, fell to No. 2 after suffering a 58-57 loss to the Seahawks on Friday, Jan. 10. Lynden missed three late free throws at the end of the game, sustaining only its second loss over its past 30 games - the other also coming at the hands of Anacortes.

The Lions (11-1, Northwest Conference 4-1) have since bounced back, winning at White River and at Nooksack Valley by an average margin of 27 points per game. Anacortes (9-2, 4-0), which moved up from No. 8 to No. 5 after the big win, has won its only game since facing Lynden.

The Lynden Christian boys' basketball team came in at No. 9 in the Class 1A voting. Like Lynden, the Lyncs' most recent loss came at the hands of Anacortes, 65-59, on Monday, Jan. 13. Lynden Christian (8-4, 4-1) will be preparing for a big game against inner-city rival Lynden, which will take place at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, at Lynden Christian High School.

The Lummi boys' basketball team fell from No. 2 to No. 4 in this week's rankings after losing to Neah Bay, 56-53, on Saturday, Jan. 11. The Blackhawks (10-1, 6-1) regrouped and gathered a nice win against Grace Academy, 72-29, on Monday.

Lynden Christian came in as the top ranked Whatcom County girls' basketball team. The Lyncs came it at No. 5 in the Class 1A poll, down one spot from last week despite not losing since late December. Lynden Christian (9-2, 5-0) is coming off convincing wins over both Anacortes and Burlington-Edison, and will face up-and-coming Lynden (9-4, 4-1) at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, at Lynden Christian High School.

Blaine came in at No. 9 behind the Lyncs. The Borderites (7-5, 3-2) just suffered a 64-52 loss to Ferndale on Tuesday, Jan. 14, which might affect their ranking going into the next vote. Nooksack Valley, which has lost three of its last four games, received four votes but did not crack the top 10.

Like Nooksack Valley, Lynden received four votes for the Class 2A poll, but it wasn't able to slip into the top 10. The Lions have won three straight games, including a 49-32 win over the then-No. 8 team in the 2A polling, White River.

Ferndale was the only other Whatcom County team to receive any votes with four in the 3A polling. The Golden Eagles moved to 10-2 overall, 5-0 in conference, after defeating Blaine 64-52 on Tuesday.
