BELLINGHAM — A wind advisory was set to remain in effect through midnight Sunday, Jan. 12 after high winds took down trees and caused power outages throughout Whatcom County on Saturday.

The National Weather Service issued the extended wind advisory early Saturday morning for Bellingham and Mount Vernon. Winds were expected to stay around 35 to 45 mph early on, with gusts up to 60 mph. Later in the day, winds were expected to settle to around 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

Weather service data showed winds gusted up to 53 mph around 1 a.m. Saturday at Bellingham International Airport. Winds died down between 3:45 a.m. and 8:53 a.m. before picking back up again and reaching gusts of up to 48 mph around noon.

Puget Sound Energy crews were out fixing a variety of outages throughout Western Washington on Saturday, and estimated that 651 outages had left nearly 40,000 people without power throughout the company's service area around 11 a.m., with most outages in Kitsap, Island and King Counties.

Whatcom residents took to social media to report several trees came down overnight in rural areas, in some cases taking out power lines. PSE had estimated power would be restored to the Five Cedars and Potter Road areas near Van Zandt by 2 p.m. Saturday, according to a post on the Nooksack Tribe Emergency Management Facebook page.
