Brandland leads Mount Baker girls in close win over Nooksack Valley

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJanuary 10, 2014

Mount Baker's girls' basketball team stayed in stride with Nooksack Valley and pulled off a 50-47 Northwest Conference win Friday, Jan. 10, at Mount Baker High School.

The Mountaineers were led by Emily Brandland's 21 points as the Pioneers shut down Emily Yost on offense.

"The girls are used to feeding it to the post (Yost), but they triple-teamed her, so they decided we would have to score without Emily (Yost) and Brandland stepped up," Mount Baker coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview. "Emily (Yost) still stepped up and grabbed some rebounds, but every time we fed her the ball it was a turnover. It was great to see the rest of the girls take a larger role on offense."

Yost finished with just two points, but grabbed 15 boards.

Lindsay Hayes led the Pioneers with 12 points, and Mariah Perry added eight more.

Raydeen Engels added 10 points for Mount Baker.
