Bellingham police investigating string of car break-ins

BELLINGHAM - Police are investigating a series of car break-ins that happened early Friday, Jan. 10, in the 3100 block of Racine Street and the 1800 block of Williamsburg Court.

Police believe the five vehicle prowls were committed by the same person.

Witnesses reported seeing a male wearing a blue and white plaid hoodie, blue jeans and white sneakers, Sgt. Shawn Aiumu said. The person was either carrying one large backpack or two small ones, according to witness statements.

After witnesses reported the burglar trying to open door handles and trunks in an apartment complex on Racine Street, police set a perimeter and brought in a police dog.

The police, led by the dog, backtracked to Williamsburg Court, where they discovered one more prowled vehicle, likely done by the same person, who eluded capture.

The investigation is ongoing, Aiumu said.
