Blaine girls' defense stops Bellingham

Alexis McElwain scored 22 points to lead Blaine girls' basketball to a 54-31 win over Bellingham in a Northwest Conference matchup Thursday, Jan. 9, at Bellingham High School.

The Red Raiders were led by Alyssa Porter's eight points and nine rebounds, both game-highs for Bellingham.

"Blaine applied some good on-ball pressure and we also expected to shoot the ball better," Bellingham coach Ed Wissing said in a phone interview. "They crashed the boards extremely well and got themselves second and third chances."

Blaine's defensive pressure forced 20 Bellingham turnovers. The Red Raiders fall to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in NWC play.

Taylor V'Dovec added 10 points for Blaine. The Borderites improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the NWC.

Bellingham's next game is at Squalicum at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13. Blaine plays next at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Ferndale.
