Lynden boys' basketball starts as unanimous No. 1

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJanuary 8, 2014

The Lynden boys' basketball team was a unanimous selection as the top 2A basketball team in the state in the first Associated Press prep boys' basketball poll released Wednesday, Jan. 8.

The Lions (9-0, Northwest Conference 3-0) are coming off a one-point victory against Burlington-Edison, 45-44, on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and a 58-46 win over Squalicum on Jan. 2. Lynden is holding opposing teams to just 46.7 points per game this season while averaging 59 points itself. Junior Scott Hastings is currently leading the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game.

The Lummi boys' basketball team came in ranked No. 2 in the Class 1B boys' basketball poll. The Blackhawks are a perfect 9-0 on the young season, and they are fresh off a convincing 75-26 win against Grace Academy on Monday, Jan. 6.

Lynden Christian came in ranked No. 8 in the boys' Class 1A poll after holding a 6-3 overall record.

The Lynden Christian girls' basketball team was the highest ranked girls' team in the area, starting the first Class 1A poll of the season at No. 4 behind top-ranked Brewster, Cashmere and Okanogan. The Lyncs' only two losses of the season have come against No. 1 Brewster and No. 2 Cashmere at the Cloud 9 Sports Christmas Classic basketball tournament in late December. Brewster, the defending Class 1A state champions, handed the Lyncs their worst loss of the season, 68-39, in a non-league contest.

Blaine rounded out the top 10 in the 1A's despite a 5-4 overall record. The Borderites fell to Lynden Christian earlier in the year 44-42, and staged a late 51-48 comeback-win against Nooksack Valley on Jan. 3. The Pioneers, who are 9-1, received nine votes but were left just outside the top 10.
