Bellingham boys' defense shuts down Meridian

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJanuary 6, 2014

Bellingham's boys' basketball team earned a 66-57 win over Meridian in a Northwest Conference game Monday, Jan. 6, at Bellingham High School. The Red Raiders were led by Tristan Hurley's 16 points and three assists in the win.

"It was a hard-fought battle, Meridian made a lot of shots early," Bellingham coach Brad McKay said in a phone interview. "They did a good job executing their stuff. We needed to pick up the defensive intensity and did in the third, which helped extend our lead in the third and fourth."

Alex Martin and Blake Briones led the Trojans with 13 points apiece. McKay said Dante Check's defense on Martin was a key to Bellingham's win.

The two teams combined for 39 fouls in the game, but just 15 turnovers.

Bellingham's next game is at 7:15 Thursday, Jan. 9, at Blaine. Meridian plays next at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Squalicum.
