Drug deal turns into armed robbery in Samish Way motel

BELLINGHAM — Police arrested a Bellingham woman Sunday night, Jan. 5, on suspicion of setting up a drug deal that turned into a robbery at gunpoint on the Samish Way motel strip.

Madison Patricia Crabtree, 21, had just made friends with the victim last week at the Aloha Motel, said Lt. Rick Sucee.

According to police, they got to talking and arranged a later meetup at the motel, 315 N. Samish, so she could sell drugs to him. But when the man showed up to the room around 6:20 a.m. Dec. 29, he was met by two armed men — one pointing a black handgun and one holding a knife — who robbed him of about $1,000 cash, Sucee said.

Police caught up with Crabtree at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Samish. Officers booked her into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery, second-degree identity theft and failure to appear for possession of stolen property and bail jumping.

The two men remain at large. Detectives have strong leads on the identity of the suspect with the knife: a 39-year-old man known to police, Sucee said. The identity of the gunman, however, remained unknown Monday. Police arrested the suspected gunman hours after the robbery. See full, corrected story here.

In late October, Deputy Prosecutor David Graham charged Crabtree with using a stolen credit card to buy hundreds of dollars in goods: two full tanks of gas for her minivan, a $250 gift card from a local salon, clothes from a store in Bellis Fair mall and items from Walgreen's. She then missed a followup hearing in Whatcom County Superior Court, according to charging papers filed later on.
