Ferndale boys' wrestling took first at the Everett Classic behind first-place finishes by Klinton Maassen in 182-pound division and Abaeus Wilson-Premo in the 126-pound division on Saturday, Jan. 4.
"Wilson-Premo wrestled smart, controlled matches," Ferndale coach Caleb Schlack said in a phone interview. "Maassen looked dynamite in his matches. As a whole, the varsity guys battled hard and wanted to win."
Broc Graves (106), Kevin Bennett (120), Hunter Grunhurd (195), Charnjit Mattu (170) and Chris Hernandez (285) tied for third in their divisions for Ferndale. The Golden Eagles won the tournament with 141 points.
Meridian also attended the Everett Classic, with just three wrestlers travelling due to an illness going around the team.
"Trevon Elgersma, in his second bout was about to pin Matt Riley from La Conner, but he got rolled and was pinned," Meridian coach Fred Pulphus said in a phone interview of his varsity wrestler's close defeat.
Ferndale takes on Stanwood at a double dual on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and Meridian hosts Nooksack Valley on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
