Nooksack Valley grabs two first-place finishes

Nooksack Valley's boys' wrestling team traveled three-and-a-half hours to compete with the best, and two wrestlers returned home with first-place finishes on Saturday, Jan. 4.

The Pioneers competed at Lakes High School in the Warriors Mat Time Holiday Classic. Michael O'Brien and Felix Rojas took first place in the 132-pound and 106-pound weight classes, respectively.

"The wrestlers were tired in the first round from the drive," coach Chad Parson said in a phone interview. "It took us a little to get warmed up, but the guys were really on top of their technique."

Second-place finishers for the Pioneers included Jared Parsons (145), Alex Forsee (106), Kaleb Cude (160) and Tyson Mergal (285). Elijah Rhoade finished third in the 120-pound class.

The Pioneers hit the mat again on Wednesday, Jan. 8, to take on Meridian.
