Fire poker beating puts ex-boyfriend in Bellingham hospital

A young woman beat her ex-boyfriend over the head with a fire poker Friday morning, Jan. 3, in the Peaceful Valley area, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies believe Melissa Ayers, 19, attacked the man, 33, while he was trying to sleep at 10:30 a.m. in his home in the 6100 block of Bellwood Drive.

"She came storming into the house," said Sheriff Bill Elfo.

The former couple had been arguing lately, the sheriff said. He didn't know, off-hand, what had angered Ayers on Friday morning.

The ex-boyfriend fought back. He armed himself with a fork, Elfo said. At some point in the melee, the handle broke off of the poker.

Both the man and Ayers were hurt in the fight. Ambulances rushed them to St. Joseph hospital. Their injuries weren't life-threatening.

Ayers now faces a charge of second-degree domestic violence assault.
