Blaine's boys' wrestling team took second at the Rock Invite on Saturday, Dec. 28, at Vashon Island High School. The Borderites were led by Christian Sharp, who won the 152-pound division.
Mount Baker also competed in the tournament, taking 12th. Travis Lindsay was the highest finisher of the day for the Mountaineers, as he took third in the 170-pound class.
"We are pleased with Lindsay," Lepper said. "He is battling and wrestling pretty hard. He still has things to work on but for the second tournament of the year, he did a good job."
Four other Blaine wrestlers reached the finals in their divisions, but Sharp was the only one to take home a win in the last round.
"We were happy to get five in the finals," Blaine coach Craig Foster said in a phone interview of competing with the top teams in Class 1A. "Christian beat a kid who was a high placer at state last year. He had a great tournament all the way through."
Blaine's second-place finishers were Gage Lott (126), Anthony Frey (138), Jon Stewart (160) and Mikey Antczak (285).
"Gage Lott lost by a point; it came down to the wire, he really did battle," Foster said. "Jon and Mikey lost to guys who got second in state last year."
Three other wrestlers finished in fifth place for Baker, including Skyler Cannon (120), Shelby Miles (126) and Alex Ray (182).
Baker gets back in action on Saturday, Jan. 4, in the Warden Tournament at Warden High School. Blaine's next match is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Squalicum.
