Strong finish not enough for Ferndale boys

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 28, 2013

Despite a strong second half, Ferndale boys' basketball took a 76-63 loss to Marysville-Pilchuck on Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Mountlake Terrace Holiday Tournament in Mountlake Terrace. The Golden Eagles were led by Austin Honeycutt's 24 points and nine rebounds - both game-highs.

"We got off to way too slow of a start - our intensity wasn't where it needs to be," Ferndale coach Monte Walton said in a phone interview. "We outplayed them in the second half - credit to our kids for not quitting."

Ferndale outscored Marysville-Pilchuck 43-37 after being outscored 39-20 in the first half. Walton said his team captains, Daniel Riley and Brady Shearer, were key to the team's resiliency after halftime.

Riley finished with 11 points, and Shearer had 10 for the Golden Eagles.

Ferndale's next game is at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, at home against Burlington-Edison.
