Big first half boosts Bellingham girls to win

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 28, 2013

Bellingham's girls' basketball team notched a win over Lakewood 41-23 on Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Prostock Winter Classic in Mount Vernon. Alyssa Porter led the Red Raiders to the win with 19 points and six rebounds - both team highs.

"The players have gotten better at recognizing who is making the higher percentage of shots," Bellingham coach Ed Wissing said in a phone interview. "Alyssa played a fair amount in the low post tonight and scored from there. Because she's so fast, other teams put smaller players on her, so she has a natural advantage getting the ball in the post."

Wissing added that Bellingham played at its up-tempo pace, which it prefers to a slower game. He wasn't happy with the way the Red Raiders played in the second half, as the Cougars kept pace in scoring for the half. In the first half, Bellingham outscored Lakewood 27-9.

Bellingham's next game is at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, at home against Lynden Christian.
