Kooiman leads Lions to win in Arizona

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 27, 2013

Lynden's girls' basketball team topped Sonoma Valley (Calif.), 56-21 on Friday, Dec. 27, at the Cactus Jam in Tempe, Ariz. Elisa Kooiman led the Lions with 16 points and eight rebounds, both team-highs.

Kooiman also hit three of Lynden's six 3-pointers. Stephanie Somers added 11 points and Kaitlyn Mark also had 10 points.

"Our bench was fantastic. Kira Nelson came off the bench and played great minutes in a physical game, and Emily Holt had a good game off the bench," Lynden coach Rob Adams said in a phone interview. "The pair of them went 5 of 7 with 11 points. Kaitlyn Mark played really solid. ... She got beat up and bruised a little."

Adams said his team's experience in a physical game earlier this season against Lake Stevens prepared them for the physicality that Sonoma Valley showed them.

Lynden plays again at noon, Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Cactus Jam in Tempe, Ariz.
