Birch Bay, Lake Padden offer polar plunges for New Year's Day

Folks who want to start the new year off with a chilly swim can attend one of two polar plunges in Whatcom County Jan. 1.

Bellingham residents can head to Lake Padden Park for the Resolution Walk/Run around the lake at 11 a.m. followed by the Polar Dip at noon. The event is free and starts in front of the bath house at about 10:45 a.m.

For those who would prefer a salt water dip, there is the Birch Bay Polar Bear Plunge at noon. The Birch Bay event is free and takes place on the beach across from CJ's Beach House Restaurant.

The event begins with registration at 9:30 a.m. and includes prizes for best costumes, oldest participant, the participant who traveled the farthest and the person who has been plunging for the most years.
