B y the numbers That is the highest estimated percentage of juvenile steelhead that are eaten by western gulls, according to a recent NOAA report. Scientists at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center developed an experiment in hopes of quantifying western gull predation on threatened juvenile steelhead in six watersheds along the central California coast. Scientists tagged juvenile steelhead and then searched gulls colonies for the regurgitated tags.
