Lions snag big win over Sumner

On a big court under big lights, Lynden's boys' basketball team defeated Sumner 43-40 on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Showare Center in Kent.

Jaremy Martin put the Lions up 41-40 with 30 seconds left after making a layup and Jalani Phelps got a big steal with seven seconds left to seal the win.

"It was a game where we struggled but found a way to win," Lynden coach Brian Roper said in a phone interview. "It was a fun environment in the arena."

Sterling Somers made up for Scott Hastings' foul trouble by scoring 16 points, including four 3-pointers.

"He was able to provide some offense," Roper said of Somers. "It was a good team win against a good opponent."

The Lions take on Sehome on Monday, Dec. 23, at home.
