Lynden junior running back and linebacker Trent Postma was one of three returning starters Lynden coach Curt Kramme was relying on to have a big season this past fall, and Postma responded as one of the top defensive players and backs in the Northwest Conference.

He helped lead the Lions to their third straight Class 2A State Championship and was selected Associated Press 2A All-State Player of the Year when all-state teams were announced Thursday afternoon, Dec. 19.

"I worked really hard in the offseason to prepare for football," Postma explained in a phone interview after receiving the news. "I'm speechless."

All-state selections were compiled by votes from a panel of sports writers and editors across the state. Postma was previously selected Class 2A/3A NWC MVP by league coaches and helped the Lions three-peat as state champions. He can now add best 2A football player in the state to his awards haul.

Postma, with teammate Jaremy Martin, was one-half of a linebacker duo Kramme billed as one of the best he's ever coached. He compiled 89 tackles and helped limit opposing offenses to 11.4 points per game and 3.7 yards per rush.

He was Lynden's second leading tackler and that came after moving from defensive end to linebacker this year. Postma said the transition was easier given he played linebacker every season previous to last year.

Offensively, the Lynden junior ran for a team-high 1,379 yards and 14 touchdowns, recording five 100-yard games. His best outing was a 236-yard performance against Squalicum.

"It's awesome," said Postma of serving as the Lions' lead back. "Lynden's offense is fun. It's real fast-paced and being the team's running back is just an honor. I work really hard, and it's been awesome to have a lot of success. I can't give the offensive line enough credit."

Postma, who was a first-team choice at both running back and linebacker, was one of many Lions who received all-state selections.

Martin, Jalani Phelps, Tristan Campbell, Trevor Lange and Rudy Mendoza also were rewarded for their strong play.

Martin and Phelps, like Postma, earned selections on both sides of the ball. Martin, who broke Lynden's 22-year old single-season tackling record with 113.5 tackles, was a first-team pick at linebacker and a second team tight-end selection.

Phelps, who caught 55 passes for 837 yards and nine touchdowns, earned a first-team selection at wide receiver and a second-team pick at on the defensive line.

Senior guard Trevor Lange and senior center Tristan Campbell - both of whom made up two-fifths of Lynden's completely rebuilt offensive line - each earned first-team selections, while first-year starting safety Rudy Mendoza was a first-team pick as a defensive back.

Sehome junior offensive lineman Drew Norvell was the only other Whatcom County 2A player to land on an all-state team. Norvell was a second-team selection.

Mount Baker, which lost to Freeman in the 1A state title game, also earned a number of all-state selections.

Those included Andrew Zender, Izaiha Schwinden, Chad Cohn, Cody Larson and Alex Tyska.

Zender, who earned 1A All-NWC MVP honors, was a first-team quarterback selection. The Mount Baker senior threw for 1,091 yards and 15 touchdowns and also ran for 496 yards and 11 scores.

Schwinden was selected both as a first-team defensive back and a second-team running back. He headlined a strong Mount Baker secondary and ran for 1,350 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Larson was a first-team selection at linebacker, Cohn, a sophomore tackle, was a first-team offensive lineman pick and Tyska was selected as both Class 1A's top placekicker and punter.

Meridian's Spencer Blackburn and Letrez Jones both earned multiple all-state selections. Blackburn was a first-team choice on both the offensive and defensive line, while Jones, who ran for a league-best 1,960 yards and 30 TDs, earned second-team selections at both running back and defensive back.

Speedy Blaine sophomore wide receiver Josiah Westbrook, who caught 38 passes for 787 yards and 12 TDs, was a first-team pick at wide receiver, and Nooksack Valley lineman Leni Halaapiapi was a second-team choice on the offensive line.

Ferndale's Joey Akers was the Golden Eagles' lone all-state selection. The ultra-athletic running back/defensive back earned a first-team nod in the secondary.

Lummi's Austin Brockie was a second-team pick at wide receiver, and Deion Hoskins was a second-team selection on the defensive line.

Camas quarterback Reilly Hennessey was voted 4A Player of the Year, Bellevue all-purpose player Budda Baker was voted 3A Player of the Year, Freeman back Markus Goldbach and Zillah receiver Brady Widner shared 1A honors, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague quarterback Dylan Harz was voted the best 2B player and Neah Bay QB Josiah Green was selected the top 1B player.
