Blaine boys' wrestling wins twice

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 18, 2013

Blaine's boys' wrestling team is preparing for a huge tri-state meet on Friday, Dec. 20, but that didn't stop the Borderites from winning both matches on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Blaine High School.

Blaine defeated Nooksack Valley 66-4 to open the meet and then beat Ferndale 55-15.

"Everyone is just really relaxed," Blaine coach Craig Foster said in a phone interview. "They are all wrestling with confidence. It was fun to watch. They aren't afraid to go out and try things. It was a team effort and it feels good to see them wrestle with skill and confidence."

Caleb Frey and Christian Sharp both stood out to Foster, even though there were several other wrestlers who went 2-0 on the day.

"A lot of guys did well, but those two guys pop into my head as a couple who did really well," Foster said. "They wrestled very solid against quality opponents. They built leads and did a great job."

Frey and Sharp both had pins and decisions.

The Borderites now shift their eyes toward the tri-state meet that they took 28th at last year. The meet matches the best teams from Oregon, Idaho and Washington in a meet Foster calls tougher than the state tournament.

"We're just going to get some good competition," he said. "There is no telling how it's going to go. We hope to compete well against some good competition and gain experience."

For Blaine's strong squad, it's all about working hard and getting in better shape as it moves forward, Foster said.

Ferndale defeated Nooksack Valley 54-24.

Nooksack and Ferndale compete in the Graham Morris Invite on Saturday, Dec. 21, at Squalicum High School.
