Golden Eagles make mark with big win over Anacortes

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 17, 2013

Ferndale's boys basketball team scored 43 points in the second half to upset Anacortes on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Ferndale High School.

The Golden Eagles and Brady Shearer held one of Anacortes' top scorers, Ty Johnson, to just five points. Johnson is averaging 24 per game this season.

"We just kept them in front of us," Ferndale coach Monte Walton said in a phone interview. "Our defense really stepped up."

Walton gave credit to his assistant coaches - John Shaw, Jared Stevenson and Jason Owen - for the superb defensive play of his team.

After turning the ball over 14 times in the first half, Ferndale halted the sloppy play and committed only four in the second half.

"It was a real gut-check win for us," Walton said. "Hopefully it will give us good momentum going into our first league game. Once league starts, it's a war. The Northwest Conference is just so tough."

Ferndale plays Mount Baker on Thursday, Dec. 19, on the road to kick off league play.
