Recount confirms result: Berkeley defeats Hawley for North Whatcom Fire board

After a recount, the results are official: Dean Berkeley will unseat three-term incumbent Roger Hawley on the board of commissioners for Fire District 21, better known as North Whatcom Fire and Rescue.

The recount, conducted on Friday, Dec. 13, and certified on Tuesday, Dec. 17, gave the same results as the first count in November: Berkeley won with 3,808 votes to Hawley's 3,777, a difference of 0.4 percentage points. State law requires a recount if the candidates are less than half a percentage point apart.

Berkeley, 45, unsuccessfully challenged Commissioner Larry McPhail in 2011 for a different seat on the Fire District 21 board. Hawley, 64, will step down after serving as commissioner since 1996. He was Fire District 3 commissioner until 2006, when the merger with Fire District 13 created North Whatcom Fire and Rescue.
