Squalicum's defense gets it done, picks up win

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 14, 2013

Squalicum's girls' basketball team wants to be hard-nosed defensively and create opportunities from there.

The Storm did exactly that Saturday, Dec. 14, with a 42-31 win over Oak Harbor.

Squalicum held Oak Harbor to only eight points in the first half and coasted to the victory in the second.

"Our team defense was pretty stifling," coach Mark Wright said in a phone interview. "The energy we played with tonight was great. We've had some nightmarish games defensively in the past, but the first five games we've been sound defensively."

Meghan Lowry led the Red Raiders with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Sam Starr scored nine and added seven rebounds.

"I thought Sam Starr had one of her best games tonight," Wright said. "We're trying to get going in the right direction as a program and we're excited about where we are."

Squalicum (3-2) takes on Bellingham on Monday, Dec. 16, on the road.
