Blaine Borderites boys' basketball preview capsule

Coach: Shaun Pile (second season)

Last year: Finished 13th in the Northwest Conference with a 1-11 record. Ended season after going 0-1 in the 1A Tri-District Tournament and finished 6-19.

Players to watch: Josiah Westbrook (so., G); Shaquille Woods (so., P); Sean Herring (Jr., G)

Outlook: The Borderites are a young team, but coach Shaun Pile likes their make-up. Blaine returns only one starter, and sophomore guard Josiah Westbrook (11.7 points per game) emerged as one of the better backcourt players in the conference a year ago. Seniors Ryan Randell and Sean Herrig and junior Jon Fakkema are Blaine's other varsity returners. Combined, the trio only contributed 2.4 points per game. "I think our transition offense is something that is really going to help us out," Pile said in a phone interview. Sophomore newcomer Shaquille Woods should alleviate pressure off Westbrook, and Pile said the overall maturation of his club will help dictate how much success Blaine has. "I think, like I said, having more than Josiah will be huge," said the Blaine coch. "He is our main guy, and they will be game planning for him everyday. Other guys have to step up and contribute."
