Mount Baker Mountaineers boys' basketball preview capsule

Coach: Rob Gray (17th season)

Last year: Finished tied for 10th in the Northwest Conference with a 3-9 record. Ended season after going 0-1 in the 1A State Tournament and finished 11-16 overall.

Players to watch: Reuben Murashov (sr., F); Colton Ranson (jr., G); Conner Brandland (sr., F); Isaac Gilmore (sr., G); Andrew Zender (sr., F); Seth Bass (sr., G)

Outlook: There is a certain sense of excitement around Deming following an extremely successful fall sports season, and the Mountaineers boys' basketball team has a buzz of its own after last year's postseason ended a round short of a Hardwood Classic berth. Returners Reuben Murashov (13.4 points per game), Colton Ranson (7.5), Andrew Zender (4.4) and Isaac Gilmore (2.3) give Baker plenty to be excited about. Coach Rob Gray raved about the effort his club shows and said, "They may be the hardest-playing group I have ever had." Senior guard Seth Bass and senior forward Conner Brandland should also contribute. Gray said he expects Mount Baker to compete with every Northwest Conference 1A team and believes his team could eventually play with any NWC club, no matter the classification.
