Baker stays strong on defense, snags victory on road

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 13, 2013

Mount Baker got back on the winning track with a 55-43 win over Sedro-Woolley on Friday, Dec. 13, at Sedro-Woolley High School.

The Mountaineers only led by two points at the half, but a 23-point third quarter spurred Baker to victory.

"It took us a while to get started," coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview. "I think the girls settled in. They got smart and went with what worked."

Emily Yost was dominant yet again, as she scored 27 points while shooting 8 of 11 from the free throw line.

But it was the defense that led the Mountaineers through some rough patches.

"Sedro is a tough place to play," Ellis said. "It was a tough go, but I think out team defense is what did it. We were having a tough time starting things offensively. But everyone got out and hustled. It was an overall team effort."

Baker (3-1) next faces Lynden on Tuesday, Dec. 17, on the road.
