Golden Eagles hold off Blaine's late push

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 13, 2013

The Blaine girls' basketball team overcame a slow start and made a late push against Ferndale on Friday, Dec. 13, at Blaine High School, but the Borderites couldn't overtake the lead in the final minutes. Hannah Carlson led the Golden Eagles with 16 points as they were able to hold off Blaine.

"We were throwing the ball away a lot (in the first half)," Blaine coach Ryan Pike said in a phone interview. "We weren't playing our pace, so we picked it up defensively and went full court and they started turning the ball over. It was really a tale of two halves."

Taylor V'Dovec led the Borderites with 14 points, and Alexis McElwain added seven points and 10 rebounds. The duo found foul trouble in the second half, but Mikayla Deming stepped up in their place.

Pike said he was pleased with how Deming filled in when two of his top players had to come out. Deming contributed three points and nine rebounds.

Blaine will look to bounce back at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Meridian. Ferndale plays next at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16, at home against Anacortes.
