Pioneers continue winning ways against improving Red Raiders squad

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 13, 2013

Nooksack Valley's girls' basketball team topped Bellingham 48-40 on Friday, Dec. 13, at Bellingham High School to continue its undefeated season.

The Pioneers scored the first six points, but the Red Raiders responded and led by three points before the last possession of the first half.

Nooksack's Lindsay Hayes didn't want to go in to halftime behind and hit a 3-pointer to even the score before going in to the locker rooms.

"Give credit to Nooksack," Bellingham coach Ed Wissing said in a phone interview. "They scored the first six points before we committed to our transition defense. From there, we played pretty even."

The Pioneers pulled away after the half, but Wissing was proud of the Red Raiders.

"Even at the half, we did a nice job of playing disciplined," Wissing said. "It was a pretty positive game for us."

Wissing took over the Red Raiders this year and said his girls are still feeling his style out.

"We just need to understand the system a little better," Wissing said. "Get it down, know what our options are. If we don't have all five on the same page, it just takes one person to break the play down. It's going to take a little more time."

But the team has showed nothing but improvement, Wissing said.

"They've been fabulously positive," he said. "Everyone is on board with being committed to what we're trying to accomplish."

Among the leaders for the Red Raiders were Alyssa Porter, who had eight points, and Joelle Zamora, who scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds.

Nooksack was led by Brianna Turner (14 points), and Mariah Perry (13 points).

The Pioneers (4-0) head home to take on Sedro-Woolley on Tuesday, Dec. 17. The Red Raiders (2-2) play against Marysville-Getchel on Saturday, Dec. 14, on the road.
