Sehome's Colin Hakeman didn't take too long to assert himself as one of the top boys' swimmers in the Northwest Conference, taking home several wins in the Mariners' opening-season meet against Lynden.
Sehome would end up taking home the win against the Lions, 108-62, on Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Arne Hanna Aquatic Center, thanks in part to Hakeman's performance.
Hakeman took home individual wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle races, as well as swimming legs in the winning 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.
"Colin's looking great," Sehome coach Don Helling said in a phone interview. "He's starting off faster than he was last year, and he looked solid in the 200 and 500 free."
In particular, Helling said, Hakeman dominated in the 500 freestyle race, coming in nearly 29 seconds faster than second-place finisher Trevor Nims.
Sehome's Isaiah Grambo also showed his mettle in the opening meet, winning the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke while swimming legs in the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
"He is exactly where we want to be at this point," said Helling of Grambo.
Lynden's Robby Knapp, who made a good run at the Class 2A state championships last year, started his junior year off with wins in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Knapp also swam the opening leg of Lynden's second place 400 freestyle relay.
Other winners included Sehome's David Leung, who won the 200 individual medley, and Joseph Adams, who won the 100 breaststroke.
Josh Larson, who swam a leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay team, had a strong meet despite not winning any individual races. He came in second in both the 50 freestyle and 100 Butterfly to Knapp.
"He's looking real strong right off the bat," Helling said. "He had an outstanding meet."
