Meridian's girls' basketball team picked up a big 67-23 win over Granite Falls behind Riley Zapien's 23 points.
Zapien - only a freshman - is already being described as a leader by her coach Mark Gilmore.
"She's played a lot of basketball," Gilmore said in a phone interview. "She really understands the game. She has a lot of miles in basketball and understands what's going on."
Taylor Lunde also attracted Gilmore's eye with her solid play on the defensive side of the ball. Lunde had nine points in the contest.
"Lunde had a great game," Gilmore said. "She played great on defense and really rebounded well."
For Meridian (2-3), it's all about keeping the success going.
After a close loss at Bellingham, the Trojans' success is just starting.
"They came out and played real well at Bellingham and we continued that tonight with a lot of energy," Gilmore said. "We got a lot of easy baskets by beating Granite down the floor."
Now, Meridian just has to keep the victory ball rolling.
"I hope they learn from the energy and excitement they're feeling," Gilmore said. "We started games well all year, but had trouble maintaining. Now we are learning how to keep it up and work through the low spots. They're learning and starting to understand how things work."
Meridian continues its four-game home stand against La Conner on Saturday, Dec. 14.
