Bellingham girls' basketball defeats Meridian despite turnovers

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 10, 2013

Bellingham girls' basketball overcame 25 turnovers to pull off a 46-40 win over Meridian on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Bellingham High School. The Red Raiders were led by Ashley Spink's 13 points in the victory.

Alicia Romero added 10 points for Bellingham and drew praise from coach Ed Wissing for her part in a big play.

"Meridian got with two in the third quarter after we had a slow start, and Romero got a big steal that she took to the basket for a lay-in," Wissing said in a phone interview.

Alyssa Porter also had four points and led the Red Raiders with eight rebounds. Riley Zapien led the Trojans with 16 points and Janessa Murphy pitched in 14 more.

Wissing said most of his team's 25 give aways weren't the result of bad passing.

"It was just a lot of violations, like traveling," he added in a phone interview. "We did get a few extra possessions with our pressure defense."

Bellingham's next game is at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at home against Nooksack Valley. Meridian plays next at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at home against Granite Falls.
