WWU falls to border rival Clan

Despite a career-high 16 points from guard Marcel Pounds, Western Washington University fell to Simon Fraser University, 62-58, in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball opener for both schools Saturday at West Gym on the SFU campus.

The Vikings fell to 3-4 overall.

WWU led by as much as 13 in the second half and had a 56-52 lead with under three minutes left, but Chambers converted a 3-point play to narrow the gap to one, Marie-Line Petit tied the game on a free throw with 2:15 to play, then gave the Clan a 58-56 lead on a fastbreak layin with 1:48 remaining.

WWU tied the score on a post-up by Tia Briggs, but Chambers hit a jumper at the other end with 1:10 to go to give SFU the lead for good at 60-58. After Katie Colard missed a potential game-tying shot with 48 seconds left, the Clan twice kept possession with offensive rebounds before Chambers sealed the game on two free throws with 13 seconds left.

Briggs finished with 12 points for the Vikings.

WWU opened up an eight-point lead, 23-15, on a jumper by Peacocke with 5:27 left in the first period and led by two, 30-28, at halftime.
