WWU men topple Saints

Center Austin Bragg had a team-high 24 points, and freshman forwards Jeffery Parker and Joey Schreiber combined for 37 points on 8-of-14 3-point shooting as Western Washington University defeated Saint Martin's University, 87-75, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

The Vikings, ranked No.5 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in GNAC play. Parker came off the bench to score 20 points and grab a game-high eight rebounds and Schreiber had 17 points as WWU extended its school-record home winning streak to 33 and conference home winning streak to 18.

The Vikings trailed by one, 13-12, eight minutes into the contest, but then exploded with a 28-9 run in the next six minutes to take the biggest lead of the game, 40-22, with 5:52 left in the first half. Parker was 5-of-5 with two 3-pointers in the charge, and Bragg added nine points.

WWU, which shot 60.7 percent (17 of 28) from the field in the first half, had a 47-37 lead at halftime. SMU hit five of its first six shots in second half, and narrowed the margin to three twice early in the period, but the Vikings reasserted control and the gap remained in double digits throughout the last 10 minutes.
