Ferndale wins Big Dog Tournament

Ferndale's boys' wrestling team won the Big Dog Tournament after winning all three of its matches on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The Golden Eagles opened with a 47-18 win over Mountlake Terrace. Braiden Klimp got a pin in the 145-pound class to highlight the round.

Ferndale then defeated Rogers based on the fifth criteria. With the match tied 35-35 after all wrestlers had finished, the officials worked their way through each criteria, in which the two teams were remarkably similar. They both tied with seven matches and they both had two pins. But Klinton Maaffen's victory by technical fall gave Ferndale the win.

The last team to fall to Ferndale was Cascade, who the Golden Eagles beat 46-22.

"We wrestled well," coach Caleb Schlack said in a phone interview. "The competitions will get tougher and tougher. We just need to keep the ball rolling."

Ferndale next wrestles against Lynden and Burlington-Edison on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Lynden High School.
