Computer virus phone scam reported in Whatcom County

Posted by DEBBIE TOWNSEND on December 6, 2013

Some Whatcom County residents say they have received calls from a person claiming to be working with Microsoft and that the company is letting people know their computer has been infected and they need to contact tech support.

Instead of support, those who contact the help end up with viruses put on their computer, and the "support" offering to remove them - for a few hundred dollars.

It's unclear how many local people have fallen for this scam.

Microsoft doesn't call customers about viruses. Do not give out your logins and passwords.
