PREP GIRLS' WRESTLING PREVIEW: Mount Baker Mountaineers

December 4, 2013

Coach: Clyde Blockley

Last year: The Mountaineers when a perfect 4-0 in the NWC. ... Finished second in team scoring at the Mat Classic XXV with 84 points. ... Won the Region 1 Wrestling Tournament, edging conference-rival Nooksack Valley 180-128.

Wrestlers to watch: Natalie Smith (So., 118); Nicole Boardman (Sr., 112); Jessica Mata (Jr., 124); Akemi Schwinden (So., 235)

Outlook: The forecast for the Mount Baker girls' wrestling team is bright after finishing in second place at the 2013 Mat Classic XXV. The Mountaineers' coach, Clyde Blockley, has some key returners who competed well at the state tournament last year to lead a squad she said has "a new bunch of fireball." Despite Mount Baker being a bit young, Blockley likes the tempo and work ethic she has seen so far, especially from her veterans. "The older girls have been working with the younger girls, which (really) helps the younger girls," Blockley said. One person Blockley has been particularly impressed with is senior Nicole Boardman. Boardman fell just shy of qualifying for state last year, but has shown steady improvement coming in to this season. "She's very determined to place higher than she did last year," said Blockley of Boardman.
