PREP GIRLS' WRESTLING PREVIEW: Lynden Lions

December 4, 2013

Coach: Santos Gallegos

Last year: Finished in fifth place in the NWC last year with an 0-3 record. ... Recorded 19 points at the 2013 Mat Classic XXV, good for 27th place. ... Finished fourth at the Region 1 Wrestling tournament with a team total of 72 points. ... Sent three wrestlers to state last year.

Wrestlers to watch:

Outlook: The Lynden Lions are young, coach Santos Gallegos said, but that doesn't mean they are inexperienced. "This year the young girls, most of them have two years under their belts," Gallegos said. "I'm excited to see what they have to offer." His team isn't without a fair amount of experience from its returners, either. Sophomore Thalia Veliz finished in eighth place at the Mat Classic, and junior Alexus Magana won the alternate spot, but ended up not competing in the state tournament. "This year, those girls are going to surprise some people," Gallegos said. That experience many of them gained last year competing against some of the better wrestlers in the state has translated to stronger practices, which in turn should translate to a better season overall for his team, Gallegos said. The freshman, too, that are entering with as much as two years of previous wrestling experience, are bringing an added spark to the early-season practices, he added.
