North Cascades Highway through mountains closed for winter

The section of North Cascades Highway through the mountains has closed for the season after heavy snowfall from storms over the last few days.

The winter closure of Highway 20 was announced Tuesday morning, Dec. 3. It will reopen in the spring.

Avalanche and maintenance crews from the Washington State Department of Transportation found 3 new feet of snow had fallen in the previous two days. That is creating unstable avalanche zones and has already triggered several slides burying the road.

Heading east, the highway is closed at Diablo.

Last year the mountain stretch closed for the season on Nov. 20. It reopened this spring on April 16.
