PREP BOYS' SWIMMING PREVIEW: Squalicum Storm

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 2, 2013

Coach: Randy Elsner

Last year: Was fifth in the Northwest Conference with a 2-4 record. Placed fourth at district. Placed 10th at the 2A State Championships.

Swimmers to watch: Rowan King (fr., breaststroke, freestyle), Hans Kogan (sr., sprint), Andi DeKoster (sr., distance), Neall Koetje (sr., sprint), Jonathan Hegeberg (so., breaststroke, freestyle), Nathan Kamkoff (sr., breaststroke), Lucas Roberts (sr., sprints).

Outlook: The Squalicum program is looking up with plenty of returning swimmers and for the first time in four years, a returning coach, Randy Elsner. After a middling performance during the regular season last year, the Storm turned some heads during the postseason. The Storm lose 2A diving state champ, Rylan Korby, to graduation, but they bring in three freshman divers, which have all impressed in early season practices. The Storm is bolstered by 13 returning swimmers including a strong senior class looking to make some waves at the state tournament in February. "These guys have been together three or four years and have gone through three coaches," Elsner said in a phone interview. "They are looking to see awards for their hard work and put something big together for their final year." It's an old-and-young team this year for Squalicum, which has a plenty of swimmers in their senior season and a large freshman class. Rowan King has caught the eye of Elsner early this year in the breaststroke and freestyle.
