PREP BOYS' SWIMMING PREVIEW: Sehome Mariners

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 2, 2013

Coach: Don Helling

Last year: Was first in the Northwest Conference with a 7-0 overall record (6-0 NWC). Won the district title. Placed second at the 2A State Championships.

Swimmers to watch: Isaiah Grambo (jr., IM, freestyle), Josh Larson (jr., freestyle), Colin Hakeman (so., freestyle), Joseph Adams (so., breaststroke, freestyle), Trevor Nims (jr., freestyle), Patrick Lisosky (jr., breaststroke), Trip Jakeman (jr., butterfly, IM)

Outlook: The Mariners are coming off their first season in five years without a state title. They graduated 13 seniors after a second-place finish at the Class 2A State Championships. Sehome has won 12 straight district titles and is looking for its 13th. But the gap close between the Mariners and the field, because Sehome doesn't have a single senior on the roster. "Things even out," coach Don Helling said in a phone interview, "It goes in cycles." What Sehome lacks in a senior class, it more than makes up for in a talented junior class led by Isaiah Grambo. Grambo and Josh Larson are the co-captains and are being counted on to lead the Mariners this year. The Mariners always have talent in the works and the same goes for this season. "We have a lot of interesting prospects thrust into new roles," Helling said. "We are looking good and training hard." Losing half the team to graduation will put a dent in any program, but if anybody can overcome the loss, it would be Helling's Mariners.
