PREP BOYS' SWIMMING PREVIEW: Lynden Lions

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 2, 2013

Coach: Steve Gibb

Last year: Was third in the Northwest Conference with a 4-3 overall record (4-2 NWC). Placed sixth at district. Tied for 12th at the 2A State Championships.

Swimmers to watch: Robbie Knapp (jr., freestyle, butterfly), Grant Williams (sr., freestyle, butterfly, distance), Michael Johnson (jr., backstroke, freestyle), Per Wolfisburg (so., breaststroke), Jordan Thompson (jr., breaststroke), Zack Woodyard (sr., freestyle)

Outlook: It's a bit of a rebuilding year for the Lions after a solid season last year. Lynden lost roughly a dozen swimmers to graduation and is looking to revamp with young talent. The head of that talent is co-captain Grant Williams. He gives the Lions an edge in the butterfly, which also features Robbie Knapp. Knapp and Williams also have stepped into the roles of trying to lead the team in the pool and on the deck. The struggle for the Lions will be to get the newer swimmers in shape and up to par with the league by working on conditioning and sprinting. "We won't be quite as strong as last year, but we'll be alright," coach Steve Gibb said in a phone interview. The Lions don't have a lot of year-round swimmers, which may slow down the team at the start, but the Lions could pick it up at the end of the season. "We'll be somewhere in the middle mix," Gibb said. "I'm just hoping to get a few kids on to state."
