PREP BOYS' SWIMMING PREVIEW: Bellingham Red Raiders

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDDecember 2, 2013

Coach: Jeff Anderson

Last year: Was fourth in the Northwest Conference with a 3-3 record. Placed seventh at the district tournament.

Swimmers to watch: Martin Sloley (so., freestyle), Logan Dozal (jr., IM, freestyle, backstroke), Gabe Travers (sr., IM, breaststroke, butterfly), Christian Buhler (jr., freestyle, IM), Griffin Ellis (sr., freestyle, backstroke), Nick Overgaard (sr., sprint), Michael Leishmann (jr., IM, freestyle), Eli Ninnemann (jr., breaststroke), Grant Hildreth (so., freestyle).

Outlook: Bellingham boasts a large team that includes some experienced swimmers coming off a solid season last year. A season ago, the Red Raiders didn't have a senior, but this year they bring in seven to start the season. With the experience of a senior cast, it will help talented freshmen Brisen Pearson, who competes in the butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke, and Shea Mielke, who will race in the butterfly and freestyle. With 26 swimmers from Bellingham and four from Ferndale, which co-ops with the Red Raiders, the Red Raiders have one of their deepest squads in years. It's all part of coach Jeff Anderson's plan to build the Bellingham program up to compete with the powerhouse that is Sehome. Bellingham also brings in two new divers, seniors Chad Chedelin and Nick Donath, to fill out a four-man diving group. Sloley, Dozal and Travers all went to the state finals a year ago and are looking to make it back.
