PREP WRESTLING PREVIEW: Nooksack Valley Pioneers

December 1, 2013

Coach: Chad Parson

Last year: The Pioneers are coming off a rough 2012-13 campaign that saw them finish 11th in the NWC with a 1-4 conference record. ... Nooksack Valley, which sent three wrestlers - Paul Newell, Taylor Gardner and Jesse O'Bryan - to the state tournament, finished tied for 42nd with five points at the Mat Classic XXV.

Wrestlers to watch: Hunter Whittern (Jr., 138-145); Taylor Gardner (Jr., 145); Jared Parson (So., 152), Kalub Cude (So., 160).

Outlook: With a new year comes a fresh new approach, or at least that's what Nooksack Valley coach Chad Parson is hoping for. After spending three days at a three-day coaching clinic, Parson returned with a new approach to coaching, although he's keeping most of those secrets tight to the chest as the season nears. "It's a good, solid strategy change," he said. Junior Taylor Gardner returns as the Pioneers' lone state competitor last year, winning one match and losing two in the first day of competition. Nevertheless, Parson and the Nooksack Valley squad are short in experience, looking toward an almost-entirely freshman group at the heavier weights. "Our lighter weights are going to be our stronger points," Parson said. "Our heavies are our freshmen ... but I'm really impressed by (them)."
