PREP WRESTLING PREVIEW: Mount Baker Mountaineers

December 1, 2013

Coach: Ron Lepper

Last year: The Mountaineers finished in seventh place in the NWC with a record of 2-2. ... Mount Baker hit its stride once the postseason began, placing second behind Blaine at the Class 1A Regional Tournament. ... Eight wrestlers advanced to the state tournament for the Mountaineers, helping guide them to a 12th-place finish in the 1A class.

Wrestlers to watch: Shelby Miles (Sr., 113); Alex Tyska (Sr., 152); Max Martinson (Sr., 182); Travis Lindsey (Sr., 170)

Outlook: Mount Baker is top heavy with its wrestling team, returning a myriad of boys who had strong post-season runs last year. With that said, though, coach Ron Lepper said his team isn't one with imposing athletes, but more so technically sound wrestlers. "They are not necessarily the most talented wrestlers, but they're hard workers," Lepper said. "We like to refer to them as 'Grinders,' which are guys that work hard for a whole six minutes." Seniors Shelby Miles (113) and Joey Walton (132) are the only potential returners who won matches at state last year, although Walton's status for the beginning season is uncertain given an undisclosed injury. Other wrestlers Lepper is going to rely upon to take a more dominant role this season are sophomore Jeremiah Cronk (126), who was an alternate for the Mat Classic XXV in his freshman year, and Alex Ray (170), who made it to the finals of his class in the Class 1A Sub Regional Tournament. 2013-14 SCHEDULE
