PREP WRESTLING PREVIEW: Ferndale Golden Eagles

December 1, 2013

Coach: Caleb Schlack

Last year: Ferndale finished sixth in the NWC last year, recording a 2-2 record in conference while winning all three of its out-of-conference meets. ... Nine Golden Eagles qualified for the state tournament, and saw Kam Williams, who has since graduated, place sixth overall in the 220-pound class. ... Finished in 36th place at the Mat Classic XXV with 16.5 points.

Wrestlers to watch: Adaeus Wilson-Premo (Sr., 126-132); Klinton Maassen (Sr., 182-195); Chris Hernandez (NA, 285); Aaron Brackenreid (NA, 285)

Outlook: If anything, Ferndale coach Caleb Schlack doesn't have a shortage of bodies. When the first day of boys' wrestling was upon him, 66 wrestlers filled his gym. The only problem now, which he said isn't entirely a bad one, is finding the space to practice with that many kids. "Our numbers are just so high we are dealing with a problem we haven't had to deal with before," he said. Not that he's complaining, though, knowing that his team certainly doesn't lack talent. Klinton Maassen and Adaeus Wilson-Premo are pegged to play key roles for the team, having competed at state last year. Wilson-Premo lost both his matches, but Schlack still expects much from his tested senior. "He's coming in, putting a lot of time in the offseason wrestling with some high-named kids in the state, hanging in there a little bit better every day," said Schlack of Wilson-Premo. A big battle in early-season training is for the heavyweight spot. Aaron Brackenreid and Chris Hernandez are both competing for the spot, and Schlack is highly impressed with what he's seen from both of them.
