PREP WRESTLING PREVIEW: Blaine Borderites

December 1, 2013

Coach: Craig Foster

Last year: Blaine found success just about everywhere it went last year, starting with a perfect 4-0 record in the NWC. ... The Borderites won the Class 1A Regional Tournament. ... Blaine sent 11 wrestlers to the Mat Classic, finishing tied for eighth place after recording 56 points.

Wrestlers to watch: Mike Antczak (Sr., 285); Jon Stewart (NA, 160); Christian Sharp (Sr., 138); Kyle Gonzales (Sr., 106)

Outlook: On the opening day of practice, Blaine coach Craig Foster looked out to a Borderite team that boasted eight returners who competed at the Mat Classic last season. That's not a bad sight to behold. "It's the highest number since I've been at Blaine," Foster said. Leading that group is senior heavyweight Mikey Antczak, who finished in fourth place last year. Although Christian Sharp (138), Jon Stewart (160), Anthony Frey (126), Caleb Frey (132) and Kyle Gonzales (106) didn't advance beyond the first day of competition, they all still won a match at the state tournament. "If we can get our team to take the next step and get all those guys to win that next match, we'll be in the hunt," Foster said.
