Boating: Gig Harbor has three life jacket loaner locales

jeff.mayor@thenewstribune.comDecember 1, 2013

Gig Harbor now has three stations where boaters can borrow life jackets. Through the cooperative effort of the city of Gig Harbor, Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One and Washington Boating Commission, people can borrow a life jacket 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at any of the locations.

They are:

Jerisich Dock: 3211 Harbor View Drive

Eddon Boat Dock: 3805 Harborview Drive

Maritime Pier: 3003 Harborview Drive

Anyone can borrow a life jacket, they are just asked to return it when done using it, said a city news release.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in its 2012 Boating Statistics report that there were 651 boating fatalities that year. About 90 percent of drowning victims that year were not wearing life jackets, according to the report.
